Net-zero building that harmonizes with the landscape for classrooms, offices, and community space in Denver, CO

Shape Architecture and Superbloom Landscape Architecture & Planning have partnered with the Bluff Lake Nature Center to create a sustainable future for the nonprofit organization and site. Located in the heart of Northeast Denver , Bluff Lake Nature Center is a 123-acre wildlife refuge within a few miles of thousands of families in the nearby neighborhoods of Central Park, Montbello, Northwest Aurora, Park Hill, and Commerce City. With the growth of the neighborhoods around the site, general visitation and the education programs at BLNC have grown significantly.  BLNC educates individuals to be engaged, resilient, and curious; conserves a natural area in the city; furthers equity in outdoor access; and nurtures the health and well-being of communities and ecosystems.

Our shared philosophy of contextual, ecologically-inspired design, and commitment to crafting meaningful connections between people and the land has been key to bringing the BLNC community’s vision to life, expanding equitable access to nature in Denver while modeling best practices in ecological and resilient design. Shape is proud to bring our expertise to the collaborative vision of a net-zero welcome center  - the design is conceived as a gateway to the larger landscape, drawing guests through the structure and into the site.  It is designed to blend into the landscape and focus on the incredible mountain views as well as the ecologically rich lower site.  Large overhangs create outdoor classrooms, gathering areas, and staff indoor/outdoor collaboration spaces, while also supporting photovoltaic panels to meet the Net Zero goals.
