While this is not a "Passive House" it does employ passive heating and cooling strategies; south facing skylights provide heat in winter and operable windows with an open floor plan provide passive cooling in summer.
The house also has mechanical ventilation that utilizes a heat recovery ventilator. This guarantees continuous, filtered, fresh air.
The house is completely wrapped in reclaimed rigid foam insulation. This makes the entire structure thermal bridge free.
The heating and cooling is provided by super efficient electric heat pumps. While these are currently grid tied, the high pitched metal roof allows for solar panels at a future date. Then, the heat pumps' energy could come directly from the solar array.
This project was strongly informed by what was possible within an historical Denver neighborhood. The front of the home was left in place due to historical constraints while the rest of the home is entirely new. The addition includes one large living room, master suite, and detached carport. The client requested a modern, contemplative retreat from the stylized historical facades of the neighboring houses.
From the street, however, the addition is entirely unnoticeable, preserving the image of this historical neighborhood to the public.
This 500 SF ADU, located in Portland, OR, opens up to a shared backyard while keeping a low profile with the adjacent neighbor's house.The interior was conceived as a single story with half the floor plan consisting of a cathedral ceiling over the living area. The other half contains a cozy bedroom below and a lofted sleep space above. The custom interiors by our friends at Earthbound Industries provide a warm and welcoming element to the space.
GOLDEN ADU 2
This 500 SF Accessory Dwelling Unit in Golden, CO was designed based on views and light. The building allows a degree of privacy and is oriented to the east and west. The form was determined based on the framing of the scenic views of the surrounding landscape. While sitting in the living room, the occupant has mountain vistas in three directions.
This project was strongly informed by what was possible within an historical Denver neighborhood. The rear, 2 story contemporary addition allows one large "living room" (kitchen, dining, living). This allows a much better connection to the south facing rear garden area. It also adds 2 bedrooms above.
From the street, the addition is barely noticeable, preserving the image of this historical neighborhood to the public.
This 650 SF 1-bedroom Accessory Dwelling Unit in Golden, CO was built on top of an existing garage. The ADU is oriented towards the west, which provides views of the foothills.

We are excited to be working alongside Phoenix HAUS, who will be supplying all the prefabricated wall panels. The continuous exterior insulation is a fiberboard product from Germany and is comparable to rigid foam in R-value / inch.
